Looks like 1/2 mile racing is coming back to Colorado Springs airport again this year. No registration details yet, but the date has been announced. Had a pretty good showing from the SORC crowd last year. Hope to see you guys there again. Had planned on hosting a BBQ Friday night, but there's a big event downtown put on by the hill climb folks, so we'll probably just head down there. They shut down the streets, have live music, motocross stunt guys, hill climb cars on display, etc.

Dear Mr. cjhans,
So how did the event go Carl? Did you enter your car? To the best of my knowledge we had the first legal 1/2 miles drags at Thedford during the 2006 SORC. We would have liked to continue this event but because of a number of problems that would take a lot of time to explain we have been unable to offer it again. Half mile drags so much better than 1/4 mile in my opinion. You can really stretch the car out and see what it will do. Twice the fun.

Oh the Thedford Drags that was a great time, truly one of the best events ever put on by the SORC. What made it even better was to take spectators for rides the smiles on their faces were priceless.

Last year went off with a hitch. The ol' Mercury hung in there and ran a best of 119 mph. Hoping to put up some more respectable numbers this year with the new engine, but I really need a mile to get it rolling. Lots of spectators, and lots of cool cars. It's a pretty laid back atmosphere. The airstrip surface is super smooth, well over a mile long and about six lanes wide, so it's a lot less stress than running on two lane blacktop. No real tech inspection to worry about, unless you're exceeding 180 mph. Just line up whenever you want against whoever you want and make as many runs as you want throughout the day. Friday the fastest top speed wins, then Saturday is open runs in the morning and they take four cars from each class with the fastest top speeds for single elimination "roll racing" which is more like a traditional drag race, but starting from a 60mph roll and running for a 1/2 mile. I think we had four or five SORC racers attend last year, hoping to see a few more this year. Here's a video of one of my runs from last year:
