So me and a buddy would like to come out for the 2017 challenge. I have a couple concerns that I'd need addressed before submitting our paperwork.
1: Since we both want to drive, we cannot be navigators for each other (or can we?). Are navigators absolutely necessary for the 85mph class? 2: Since we are first time drivers, we need to be in Arnold on Thursday to be in the 4pm driver's meeting. Is there any reason to be around on Friday if only doing the main challenge? 3: I have relatives in Gothenburg that I would stay at. Is that a reasonable location (Looks to be about a half hour south of Arnold) to stay at for the event? 4: My car is a 2015 Mustang GT, his a Camaro 1LE. Besides the helmet and fire extinguisher, are there any other requirements or best practices we should be aware of? I read the rule book but didn't see anything of note beyond the standard requirements that a late model car should meet.
Much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, and welcome to the SORC. I will try to answer some of these for you. As I know you will need a post mark dated today the 3rd.
1. If you drive one car in each race (SORC and L2L) you can switch driving and navigation duties. (One drives up while the other navigates, then switch for the drive back)
2. Friday has a mandatory 6PM drivers meeting also, and it is strictly enforced. If you miss this meeting, you will not race on Saturday. Also, Friday has a lot going on, including the Shootout, burnout contest, parade and car show.
3. I have stayed in Gothenburg before, You have to get up a little earlier, but it's not bad. The only problem is the fog in the early mornings. Also, there are other veteran racers that stay in Gothenburg. So your not alone.
4. Also required are, all leather shoes, (racing shoes recommended) and racing gloves. So you should be good to go. Make sure your helmets are up to date. If you have to buy helmets yet, be sure to get SA2015 rated helmets. The SA2005 will be phased out.
Rules will be changing and updated between now and race day. So please check the forum for any changes or updates.
Good luck and hope this helped.
Big Al

Filling out my paperwork and hope to mail it off this weekend (out of stamps). I guess if i get put on the waiting list, oh well.
Any thoughts on the Navigator? We will both be doing the open road challenge.

You don't need a navigator. You can switch drivers at the mid point and each driver can Drive one leg and navigate the other leg, but if you are asking to have two cars for one entry (one car/driver drives up, the other car/driver drives back), that is not going to happen.
You can have one car in the shootout and a different car in the road race (as long as both are teched), but having a backup car at Dunning for the south leg is not allowed.

"but having a backup car at Dunning for the south leg is not allowed." But would have been handy for me this year BTW, I'll be moving the fan while I have the engine out to replace the head gasket. Also, it was a stuck thermostat that started all my troubles. Thanks for stopping by and checking on us. Big Al

Al, just take the thermostat out.
To the OP, my wife and I have been driving together for quite a while, she drives one leg and I drive the other. It works out well, for the most part, and we both get time behind the wheel. You just have to make sure you let them know when you pick up your registration at check in.

I called my engine builder and said "Hey, remember that thermostat I asked you not to put in? well guess what happened"
So No, it will not be going back in. I had not used one before this last engine build.
